Letter, April 12, 1861.

Holograph letter signed to the Honorable Henry Stoughton, 12 April 1861, from USS Illinois off Charleston, South Carolina, regarding the transit to Fort Pickens, Florida to reinforce the Union garrison there. Describes troops and ammunition on board, their landing, preparations to defend the fort and his feelings about war and resistance.

Jeremiah Howard Gilman was born in Thomaston, ME, November 11, 1831. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY in 1856. He defended Fort Barrancas from the state militia in April 1861 and held Ft. Pickens, Pensacola, FL until it was reinforced. He served in other Civil War campaigns and retired in 1895.
